Born illegitimate, eventually she inherited a fortune fromher real father.  Through her wealth, and marriage, she moved in elite circles.               At her home Polesden Lacey she entertained a succession of politicians, ambassadors and Royalty, providing her with lots of gossip. This complex, fascinating lady collected people as obsessively as she acquired Cartier and Faberge creations.  After she died in 1942, her jewellery collection was bequeathed to the Queen Mother, and is shown being worn nowadays by members of the Royal Family.
